Level 1: Introductory Chinese (Block 1)

This course is a beginning level course of Mandarin Chinese designed for students without any Chinese Language background. Introductory Chinese will provide you with a rudimentary knowledge of the Mandarin phonetic system (Pinyin), pronunciation, tones, the writing system, daily vocabulary, and basic sentence structure. Speaking and Listening practice will be emphasized in this course. Students will learn how to greet, ask for names, ask for nationality, ask about the address, ask the date etc.

Level 2: Elementary Chinese I (Block 2)

This course is designed for those who have completed Introductory Chinese or the equivalent (30 class hrs). This course will help students improve their vocabulary, enhance their Chinese speaking, listening, writing and reading abilities. At the completion of the course, students will be able to use Chinese to ask for price, order dishes in a restaurant, change money in a bank, borrow books in a library , etc. Students are expected to make short conversations related to daily life.

Taichi

This interactive event will introduce you to the philosophy and practice of Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese health exercise. Tai Chi is a form of energy cultivation and internal martial art. You’ll learn the techniques of relaxation, breathing, balance. Tai Chi offers health benefits such as reducing tension, high blood pressure, and arthritis.

Chen Style Taichi at CVM

Chen Style Taijiquan is an unique movements inherited from a deep traditional Chinese culture. This new course will teach you the external impression and the internal power fluid from the designed physical exercise. You’ll learn not only the philosophy of Chinese martial arts (Kung Fu) but also the techniques of controlling your body and energy from the actions. All sessions are more compact for learning and training and more flexible for the participants to arrange their time.

Appreciation of Chinese Classical Dance
(WCPSS Lifelong Learning – Location: Sanderson High School)

This class is an interactive class to learn about Chinese Classical Dance, providing opportunities to learn about traditional Chinese dancing and its influence on Chinese culture. With a half lecture and half dance practice structure, this class is suited for males or females and couples. Each session will have a 50 minute lecture/discussion, a hour dedicated to practicing the dance. A final performance can be arranged. Each participant may be required to purchase a Chinese fan to use for the dance.

Level 3: Elementary Chinese II (Block 1)

Designed for those who have completed Elementary Chinese (I) or the equivalent (60 class hrs). This course will help students improve speaking and comprehension of complex topics related to everyday situations, and improve character recognition skills. Extra support and guidance will be offered to those who would like to improve Chinese character reading and writing skills. At the completion of the course, students will be able to use Chinese to rent an apartment, describe physical condition when visiting a doctor, get a haircut, talk about study life, talk about study methods, etc. In addition, Chinese culture will be introduced through this language experience. The completion of this course will equalize to HSK level 2.
